Jewellery Care

General Tips for All Jewellery Types

  1. Always remove jewellery before entering water, conducting cleaning tasks or doing exercise
  2. If your jewellery has been exposed to water, thoroughly dry it with a clean, dry and soft cloth
  3. Makeup, perfume and hairspray can damage your jewellery – always put your jewellery on last when you are getting ready
  4. Make sure that your jewellery is the first thing to come off before you get undressed (this way it won’t get caught in your clothing)
  5. Gently wipe your jewellery clean to remove skin oils and makeup
  6. Keep your gold jewellery in a separate compartment in your jewellery box – this will prevent scratches

Diamonds

  1. Delicate pieces should not be worn every day
  2. Diamond pieces should be professionally cleaned once a year
  3. Regularly check rings to ensure claws or settings are not damaged
  4. If there is damage, avoid wearing the item until it’s checked by a Brisbane jeweller
  5. To clean your diamond jewellery – prepare a small bowl of warm water with a mild detergent. Using a soft toothbrush, brush pieces gently and rinse under warm running water, then pat dry with a soft cloth. Alternatively, you may purchase jewellery cleaner from your Showcase Jeweller, which comes with its own easy to follow instructions

Pearls

  1. Pearls are porous (meaning they have tiny holes or openings) and should be kept separately from other jewellery, and wrapped in a soft cloth or pouch
  2. Do not store pearls in an airtight container – they like to breathe
  3. Avoid contact with perfumes or lotions – they can cause the surface to deteriorate
  4. Gently wipe after each wear to prevent deterioration
  5. Have your pearls restrung every two years
  6. Gently wipe the pearls with a warm, damp cloth to remove body oils or dirt (which may harm the colours) before putting them away
  7. Wash pearls periodically with mild soap (NOT detergent) and a soft cloth. When you are done, wash the pearls in clean water and wrap them in a thin, damp cotton towel to dry. If the pearls are particularly dirty, wipe the pearl with acetone polish remover (this won’t harm them). DO NOT use jewellery cleaners with ammonia or vinegar in them!

Crystal

  1. Avoid hot water, as it can cause the stones to appear cloudy
  2. Avoid wearing other jewellery with your crystals, as they are soft and may scratch
  3. Do not use jewellery cleaning solutions to clean your crystal – this can affect the lustre and loosen its settings. Instead, use warm water and a soft cotton towel or cloth. You can add baking powder and lemon juice to the water to remove stubborn stains

White Gold

  1. White gold jewellery is plated and is susceptible to wear over time
  2. Avoid wearing white gold jewellery while performing household tasks
  3. White gold should be professionally cleaned, polished and re-plated every year to ensure longevity and shine
  4. Alternatively, purchase a quality jewellery cleaning solution and cloth from the jewellers Brisbane has to offer and clean your jewellery frequently

Watches

  1. Remove all watches before showering and store in a dry place (even if they are water resistant). The steam in the shower or bathroom can cause irreparable damage
  2. Do not wear your watch while performing physical activity – unless they are sports watches that are designed to withstand the motion
  3. Store separately from other jewellery so that the watches don’t get scratched
  4. Wipe with a jewellery cloth after every use to remove damaging makeup and skin oils
  5. Never use abrasive chemicals (like alcohol) to clean your watch
  6. Don’t wear your watch in bed, especially if there is a magnetic underlay in use
