Origin of Ruby

Ruby has been important to many cultures throughout history. In ancient India, it was called the “King of Precious Stones” and medieval Europeans sought after them in the belief that they would bestow “health, wisdom, wealth and success in love.”

One of the oldest recorded sources of fine rubies is the Mogok area in Burma, where it remains a world leader for vibrant red rubies known as “pigeon blood’. Other important regions where Ruby is sourced include Vietnam, Mozambique, Thailand, Cambodia, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Tanzania and Madagascar.

What Makes A Quality Ruby?

The quality of a ruby is based on 4 key characteristics  – colour, clarity, cut and carat. The colour of ruby varies based on the region it has been sourced from, but the most valuable and sought after have a deep red hue imbued throughout the crystal structure. Clarity assesses the number and visibility of inclusions, which reduce transparency, brilliance and brightness. Inclusions also limit a ruby’s durability. The cut of a ruby is dependent on the raw shape, and common shapes include oval and cushions. Round, emerald-cut, pear and marquise are also available but are rare in large sizes and higher qualities. Size and weight dictate the carat, with fine-quality rubies over 1 carat very rare – Blockbuster Burmese Rubies command higher prices per carat than all gemstones except coloured diamonds – so ruby jewellery is often set with diamonds.

Ruby Jewellery Care & Cleaning

After raw ruby has been mined, it typically undergoes a refining process which involves heat treating to remove any purple colouration and micro inclusions that make a gem appear lighter in tone and more opaque. All of the rubies sold at Argyle Jewellers have disclosures explaining what treatments each ruby has gone through to give you peace of mind.

To care for your ruby jewellery, we recommend simply cleaning with warm soapy water and a soft brush. You can always bring your jewellery to us for an inspection and clean as well.
